All of Ted's grandparents were born in Germany and came to the United States in the 1860s. They settled in Springfield and were very active in the town.

Ted’s paternal grandfather, Theodor Geisel, married Christine Schmaelzle in1871. Although he was a jeweler by trade, Theodor Geisel owned the Kalmbach and Geisel Brewery on Boston Road in Springfield.

Ted’s maternal grandparents, George and Margaretha Seuss ran a bakery on Howard Street.
