At the time Ted was growing up in Springfield Americans were fascinated by Asian architecture. The existence of the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museums today, just next to the Seuss Memorial, is a testament to that interest. The Fuller Block, still standing today, featured a large onion-shaped dome in the style of Eastern architecture. The dome is gone today, and the building seems nothing more than a normal office building, but in Ted’s childhood he must have been fascinated with this dome since seems to have inspired a similar dome in his book, If I Ran the Zoo.
